League of Legends - Why you should be careful when buying RP and spending IP

I started playing this game mid 2010. Liking to experiment, I had the plan to buy all third level runes, so I could make some weird builds. I don't play enough for this plan, so I considered buying the IP boosts, so I could buy more runes. Here's why I didn't do it.

There are two currencies inside LoL. One you can get by playing, the other you can get by paying. IP and RP, respectively.
There is a direct translation between RP and currency (dollar, euro, etc). There are a few things you can only buy with Riot Points (RP) and some things you can only buy with IP.
There are some things you can purchase with both RP and IP, hence a worth translation between them.

First of all, IP is gained per game. Quickly looking at my match history, in 10 games the average is 93IP per game. Being generous and round, it averages 100IP per game.
You can buy, at the best price, 9300IP for 50€. That means you get at best 186IP per euro.
Looking at the champion list, which you can buy either with RP or IP, you get an average of 4.6 RP per IP.
IP Boosts, double the amount of IP you get per game, so instead of an average 100IP, you would get 200IP per game.

Now that we have these values, let's look at the IP boosts. We'll only look at the best value ones.

The 50wins boost, costs 2560RP. This means that you would get an 50*100IP with this boost. So you are trading 5000IP for 2560RP, at the ratio of 2RP per IP. Which is less than half of what RP is worth, when buying champions. A bad deal. If  you use IP gained this way to buy champions you are losing more than half its worth. You should really just use the RP to buy the champion and be done with it.

The 30days boost, costs 3490RP. The IP you can get with this is limited. Assuming a League of Legends game, averages 30minutes. 3490RP, at the ratio you can buy champions with, translates into  3490*4.6IP = 16054IP. So you have to win this much IP playing games, just to break even. At 100IP per game, this means 160games, and only then you would start to profit from this boost. During the 30day period, this means you have to play 6 games a day, just to get some benefit from this boost.

Remember, I was generous with these values, and went for the best ratios. Any other choice would worsen the conditions.

So what to do?
  1. Buy champions with RP not IP,  and try to only buy them when they are on promotion;
  2. IP is for buying things that only IP can buy, period. Do it another way and it's really not to your advantage;
  3. If you want to take a boost do so. If you play more than 2 games a day, take the 30days boost. But spend all that IP on runes (see 1.)

League of Legends - True Tier List and Logical Banning

When playing solo queue ranked games in League, if you are the first player of your team, you get to ban characters from the game, based on yours and your teammates perception of those characters value.

I, on the other hand, am not in favor of banning characters by perception. The logical action would be to ban characters with the highest win ratio, such as Rumble or Singed.

On the other hand, those characters aren't often picked, and a ban on them might prove useless. So what you really want is to ban characters that have the highest probability of being picked AND winning.

First you figure out how likely that character is to be picked, based on the games that it isn't banned.

    P(beingPicked) = %games / (100 - %bans)

And then:

    P(being picked and winning) = P(beingPicked) * P(winning)

And you get this ban-worthy Tier list:

data retrieved from LolKing on  2013-02-05
  • Popularity: % of games played;
  • Win Rate: % of games played won;
  • Ban Rate: % of games banned;
  • AdjGames: % of games played when not banned;
  • PickedAndWin: probability of being picked and winning
  • PerceivedTier: tier based on banned games;
  • Tier: tier based on PickedAndWin probability;
  • TierDiff: difference between Perceived Tier and tier.

As you can see there is quite a difference between what actually wins games and what people ban. On the other hand, judging by values in TierDiff, you can see that not many champions are overestimated, and when so, not by much. But, when talking about underestimating champions, you can look at Taric, the number one Tier character right now, Graves, Leona, Sona and Lux and clearly see that these champions' worth is underestimated. So, if you want to be a trickster you should play these.

If you just want to ban the strong ones, you should go for the top tier ones, that are not banned often: Taric, Ezreal, Miss Fortune, Caitlyn, Nunu, etc. All of these are strong game-winning choices that should be banned more.

This is just something to base decisions on. It doesn't account for synergies, or counters. It is also a bit flawed because it is supposedly sampling all ranked games, not just the good ones, like the ones in Silver+ leagues. On a math level I believe this view is pretty strong, tho.

  • D. Afonso Henriques - Brujah
  • D. Joao II - Lasombra
  • Infante D. Henrique - Ventrue
  • Vasco da Gama - Tremere
  • Luís de Camões - Ravnos
  • Marquês de Pombal - Brujah
  • Fernando Pessoa - Malkavian
  • António Salazar - Giovanni
  • Aristides de Sousa - Salubri
  • Álvaro Cunhal - Brujah

Greatest Portuguese as Masquerade Vampires

BBC made a TV show model called something like "Greatest People of All Time". I saw the Portuguese version on Youtube. The playlist is here.

So, as I understood it, a bunch of popular intellectuals nominated 100 of these Portuguese historical figures. Then it got somehow narrowed down to 10, and finally, those 10 were voted on by national popular vote (for a small phone fee ;)

Anyway, I watched it all attentively, learned a lot about those guys, a lot of it opposite to what was taught in school, and saw that if one thing their personalities were strongly defined.

So it became somewhat easy to give a Masquerade clan to each of these guys.

The Masquerade Clan of the 10 Greatest Portuguese (chronological order):
  • D. Afonso Henriques - Brujah
  • D. Joao II - Lasombra
  • Infante D. Henrique - Ventrue
  • Vasco da Gama - Tremere
  • Luís de Camões - Ravnos
  • Marquês de Pombal - Brujah
  • Fernando Pessoa - Malkavian
  • António Salazar - Giovanni
  • Aristides de Sousa - Salubri
  • Álvaro Cunhal - Brujah

The Portuguese Stereotype

Basically, this is a post where I intend to reunite things I find where Portuguese people are portrayed through foreign eyes.

1. Tintin - Mr. Oliveira da Figueira

The Tintin comic books have a huge international profile, and inside them, you can find portrayed: Mr. Oliveira da Figueira .

For a start, the name basically means Mr. OliveTree of the FigTree, and although both are common last names in Portugal, it seems that the author wasn't randomly picking names. So, Mr. FruitTree, I mean, Mr. Oliveira has a few appearances throughout the series, and I'll try to iconize them in a few images. They are in Portuguese, but I'll translate for your personal entertainment.

Here, in Mr. Oliveira first appearance: Tintin, aboard a ship is introduced by the captain to a fellow passenger, a certain sir from Lisbon, Portugal.

Without any conversation, the Portuguese immediately jumps into the occasion by presenting Tintin with several opportunity items, like ties.

A beautiful tie that matches Tintin skin color, he says. Genuine swords from Toledo, Spain, and as a gift he'll throw in a watch and a toothbrush. After a while Tintin goes away congratulating himself for not buying anything useless. He says "you always buy a lot of useless stuff from people like that". He's still loaded with junk, just doesn't realize it.

Mr. Oliveira sets shop in the middle of the desert. Tintin thinks it wont be successful, but Mr Oliveira set up in  high ground and brought a megaphone system. Immediately a lot of people come to buy things, mostly things that they don't need.

He explains to Tintin, that the operation was a success, and even better, that his clients will be back.

One of them comes back complaining about the horrible food, soap bar, that was sold to him, pledging revenge.
On another story, Tintin travels again to Mesopotamian parts, and sees Mr. Oliveira in a local market.

He recognizes Mr. Oliveira salesman skills: "Twisted man, always the same, he sold him a pair of roller skates".

Selling roller skates in a sand covered town, is of course his trademark move.

He recognizes Tintin, and immediately asks him to join him in a glass of Portuguese wine to celebrate their reunion.

Here, Mr. Olveira entertains a group of man with a very sad story, about the disgraces of a certain family. Of course the story is completely fabricated on the spot, but is nonetheless enough to make the men burst into tears.
Conclusion: In this stereotype, Portuguese are gifted merchants and men of the world, that without any evil intent push events towards their favor. No one needs a pair of roller skates in a desert town and no one sets up store in the desert. Yet he makes these happen. Mr Oliveira is also very very theatrical in his poses and speech. but even through all the personality twists, you can easily see that he's an alright guy. I would say it's actually quite representative of last century's middle class Portuguese persona. Maybe less today, but still very well done.

2. Asterix - Lusitanus

Another famous comic. In one of the more recent volumes, it portrays a Lusitanus roman slave: a member of the Lusitani tribe that lived in the western part of the Iberian peninsula. Whether questionable if  Lusitani and Portuguese are synonyms, make no mistake about the authors intentions, this guy is supposed to depict a guy from Portugal.

Each of the free slaves states their intended destination. The Portuguese guy is the short guy.

Their leader asks them to take turns speaking.

The Spanish guy suggests Spain, and immediately the Portuguese suggests them to go to Portugal.

All this guy does is this. And from it  you can read quite a bit.

Conclusion: Portuguese are short, dark haired, and have a shared sibling-like rivalry with Spanish people. Again, not a false stereotype. Not entirely accurate, but good.

Fullmooninu Filename Translator v0.7 (download)

Notice: This shouldn't be working anymore now that google translate API is a paid service. I'll revisit this project soon.

 Finally, I made a usable version of the translation application.

Download it here.

This is useful for those that use programs that are incompatible with foreign filenames, or simply for ease of use.

Anyway, some guy told me it couldn't be done, so i tried to conceive a way to do it.

Just tell me if you are interested. The more people interested in this, the more effort i'll put in it.

This is not a concept. It's actually in quite functional stage. It does have a lot of predictable bugs to work out and still no GUI. Right now it's just a .exe you run anywhere you want it to work on.

It's pretty safe, just make sure to read before you confirm anything.

Feedback is appreciated! ^_^

    Tutorial: Setting up a quick online radio for your friends.

    If you are a gamer or something of the like and you would like to setup a quick online radio, for you and your friends to enjoy the same music while playing, this is the tutorial for you.

    If you want to play music for people on Teamspeak or something, just keep reading.

     After trying several tools, I came to the conclusion that presently, the easiest way to setup an online radio is by using the Shoutcast + Winamp combo.

    Install Winamp
    First, get and install the latest Winamp .

    Install Shoutcast
     Now here comes the catch: the latest Shoucast does not bring a graphic interface. If you want to do this easily, and not have to mess around in files, get an older version. You can get it around the web. Search for Shoutcast 1 9 8 . Try this download link first, it's where I got it.

    Install it. Shoutcast is ready to broadcast to port 8000. No configuration required. Easy so far.

    Install Shoutcast DSP
    Finally, you will need to install the Shoucast DSP for Winamp, for the two, Winamp and Shoutcast, to communicate. Again, an older version is better here, for compatibility purposes and for better integrated mp3 support.

    I used version 1.90, so search the internet for Shoutcast DSP 1 9 0. Try this download link first.

    Install the DSP. Open winamp and the DSP menu should appear. If not, find it inside Winamp options.

    Using it
    All you have to do is to put files playing on winamp, and tell your friends to open the address on their media player. Most players will be able to do this easily.

    For example, put a playlist playing, tell them to open http://yourIP:8000 .

    In some cases the default 8000 port will not work, so change that in the Shoutcast settings.
